The NZ Downlight Standard IEC/NZS60598 has recently been updated which now has important implications for installation of insulation materials. GreenStuf® polyester insulation is tested to and compliant with all NZ fire requirements including the new downlight standard. Greenstuf® is certified non-flammable and can be safely abutted to CA and CA135 devices and can be safely installed covering IC80 and IC-F rated downlights, as established by the new standards.

There are several different types of downlights available on the market some of which can compromise the thermal performance of buildings. Only rated downlights allow the insulation to abut or in some instances cover the luminaire. All others require all insulation to maintain a minimum 100mm clearance. Each un-rated downlight will reduce the thermal performance of the building envelope as a result of both the necessary insulation clearance around the fitting and possible air movement through the fitting itself.

Issues around the use of un-rated downlights has caused some confusion regarding insulating around recessed fittings due to the risk of overheating and fire. GreenStuf polyester insulation is fire safe. Put simply, if GreenStuf is exposed to a naked flame it will melt away from the flame and self-extinguish.

The current safety standards for downlights in New Zealand actually allow the light-fitting to flame for up to 30 seconds when the luminaire fails. This provides significant fire risk, so careful selection of downlights as well as correct installation of the light fitting is crucial. Minimum insulation clearances around un-rated downlights are required for all types of insulation including polyester and fibreglass (glass wool) to reduce overheating and the risk of fire.

We recommend you specify and use only IC/CA-Rated luminaires with thermostat protection. This will allow the insulation (including GreenStuf polyester) to abut the luminare without compromising safety or performance. GreenStuf® polyester insulation has a maximum recommended service temperature of 160°C. GreenStuf® has been tested and certified non-flammable and complies with the fire hazard requirements of IEC 60695-11-5.
